5 Tips When Taking A Hike
With a few weeks left of summer weather, make the most of your days by upgrading your usual walk into an energetic hike…
1. Consider Your Route. Just starting to hike? Start small and build your way up. Choose a route closer to home or do a shorter circular route so you have an opportunity to assess whether you want to do another lap. Consider how much time you can spare and the type of terrain you’ll be walking on. If you’re worried about your level of fitness, plan for rest breaks along the route.
2. Keep Safety in Mind. Hiking is a low-risk activity, but let someone know your plans, including your estimated return time. It’s wise to invest in things like maps, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a GPS and it’s smart to bring a cell phone or smart watch in case of an emergency. Take regular breaks, wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. When possible, choose more densely populated walking and hiking areas.
3. Fuel Up Your Body. Prior to the hike you should eat wholewheat sandwiches, oatcakes, bananas or homemade flapjacks. Hiking is an endurance exercise which will keep your energy levels up. Make sure to bring two water bottles, and drink regularly, especially if hiking in warm temperatures to prevent dehydration.
4. Dress Appropriately. Wear comfortable clothing for the weather conditions. Dress in layers: a lightweight layer, a thermal base layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Choose loose-fitting stretchy clothing for flexibility. Come prepared with a hat, sunglasses, gloves and spare socks in a backpack. Shoes should be comfortable, lightweight, and broken in with waterproof rubber soles and supports for heels and ankles.
5. Choose Your Tribe. Hiking can be a social activity. The steady pace allows for conversation as you walk. Consider joining a walking group to meet new people and lessen the hassle of route planning. When hiking with others, stick together and match the pace of the slowest member. Not interested in an organized group? Then try to recruit a hiking buddy from your neighborhood or family.
