5 Winter Workout Ideas
Get outside and take advantage of the sparkling snow! Don’t let the brisk winter weather keep you hibernating on the couch. There’s plenty of fun to have and calories to be burned while playing in the snow. Plus, warming up to winter activities help conquer the January blahs.
1. Step outdoors. Dress properly to keep yourself warm and dry. Then take that first step to head outside for a walk or run through the neighborhood. Enjoy the holiday decorations and the peaceful serene environment. You’ll likely go much farther than you originally intended and get in those much-needed activity steps. Plus, in the winter the humidity isn’t high and it’s often easier to breathe.
2. Play in the snow. Whether it’s an impromptu snowball fight, building a snowman or constructing a snow fort, these snow-filled winter family fun activities not only improve your lifestyle and relationships, by creating many laughs and bonding moments, they also may help suppress your appetite and increase your activity points.
3. Enjoy what nature has to provide. Winter is the perfect time to visit city parks or to engage in fun winter activities like sledding and tobogganing. Take advantage of the nearest snow-covered hills. Walking up and down them carrying a sled can be a great and fulfilling workout. Or consider snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, which are two great ways to burn calories and enjoy the magic of the winter season.
4. Shovel your snow. Although it’s easy to automatically pull out the snow blower, if you’re capable, consider doing some of the snow shoveling manually with a shovel. Of course, only if it’s not too strenuous and heavy. Don’t push yourself too hard. But, clearing light snow fall from your sidewalks and driveway can be a great way to burn off calories and increase muscle mass.
5. Reward yourself with a gift. If it’s absolutely to frigid and miserable to go outdoors for your workout, consider making an extra effort to drive to the nearest indoor shopping mall. You can do your normal walking routine there and get lots of steps in while window shopping, viewing the latest fashion trends, and people watching. In the end, treat yourself to a new workout outfit for a job well done!
Regardless of whichever winter workout you choose, always stay hydrated, dress in layers and be sure to stretch when you’re done.
