5 Tips to Prevent Vacation Weight Gain
It is probably not realistic to expect that your weight loss will continue while on a trip. But that doesn’t mean you have to erase your current progress. Consider what is an acceptable result for you, whether that’s staying the same or even a minor, but manageable, gain. Then adjust to accomplish that outcome. Stay on track and enjoy your vacation with these mindful tips.
1. Move and Get in Your Steps. Activity provides a feeling of wellbeing that can help you make better food decisions, which is beneficial when stressed from traveling. Long airport layover? Do warm-up stretches at the gate or walk the length of the terminal at a fast pace. Working out reduces stress and keeps you away from the tempting fast foods surrounding you.
2. Research Cuisine. Many destinations have local “must-try” items. Preview restaurant menus and book reservations. Decide ahead of time which options to taste and then plan the rest of your meal selections around them. Think beyond the typical tourist favorites. For example, Texas may be known for barbecue and cheesy Tex-Mex, but it also offers amazing fresh seafood options.
3. Decide What is Really Worth a Splurge. Don’t waste your Points on an over-the-top breakfast buffet first thing in the morning! If you stick to your routine and choose the healthy, nutritious and low point breakfast you usually eat at home, that’s one meal you have control over. A homemade meal nearly always has fewer Points values than a restaurant meal. Save those Points values to use later for something special.
4. Beware of All-Day Grazing. Whether on vacation with family or attending a work conference try to avoid 24-hour snacking. If you’re lucky, choose healthy options like a fruit or veggie plate instead of the tempting baked goods. Try to follow your typical eating habits: If you normally have an 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. snack, then eat a mindful treat at that time. As extra insurance, bring your own portion-controlled snacks with you to prevent bad choices.
5. Stick to your workout schedule. Morning exerciser? Get up early, then enjoy the rest of your day. Many hotels offer running and walking trail guides, and your concierge can point you to local parks or tracks. Traveling with others? Suggest group activities, like a walking tour around town, renting bikes, or hiking at the nearby national park. No time for that? Walk to the conference center, short bursts of activity count, too. Squeeze in fitness wherever you can.
